Digital tools: when companies offer work experience that is 100% virtual

Doing an internship at a multinational firm without even leaving the house, and perhaps while still in one’s pyjamas, is now a possibility, thanks to the concept of virtual work experience offered by the Australian start-up InsideSherpa. Since 2017, the company has offered short work experience programmes, exclusively online, at companies from all over the globe. While students see the platform as an unprecedented opportunity to discover large companies and gain experience, employers using this method hope to unearth new talent. Around 30 companies from a variety of sectors – including General Electric, consultancy firms Deloitte and KPMG, as well as Commonwealth Bank, Citibank and JPMorgan Chase&Co – are currently offering these virtual internships.

“We started it because in Australia, there is a huge lack of opportunities and it’s really difficult for students to gain some experience, except if you know someone in the company,” explains Jeremy Grunfeld, head of student success at the start-up, which employs around 15 people. “We called the start up InsideSherpa because we wanted to be like people who guide you to something unreachable,” he adds.…
