Great Britain: HR managers walk on the tightrope with religion

Can a catholic work on Sunday? Can a Muslim work in shelves with pork in a supermarket?  Can you ask a Sikh to wear a cap like all the other drivers in the group?  British HR regularly have to work on these issues in a multicultural country that deems religious discrimination at work as illegal but often asks employment tribunals to judge these sensitive questions.

A Muslim employee refused to cash in a bottle of Champaign out of religious belief.  That’s what once again revived, during the holidays, the debate on religion at work in the UK.  The controversy was even worse since the retail chain apologized, explaining that, usually, the HR manager made sure that people who can’t touch alcohol out of religious belief weren’t assigned to the cash register. …
