United Kingdom: Co-op introduces flexible compassionate leave policy

The UK supermarket cooperative Co-op has launched a new compassionate leave policy for its 57,000 employees, granting them 10 days of leave – taken at any time and not necessarily in a single block – when someone close to them dies or is seriously ill.

What sets the leave policy announced by Co-op this month apart is that it may be taken by a staff member when somebody close to them dies or is seriously ill, regardless of their relationship. Managers may decide on a case-by-case basis to extend this paid leave if they deem it necessary.…
