United Kingdom: when companies move to break the taboo of menopause

From banking group HSBC to supermarket chain Sainsbury’s and professional services group PwC, more and more UK companies are now talking about the sensitive topic of menopause and the need to put in measures to support those employees affected. Their aim? To prevent any kind of stigmatisation of women, as well as to avoid mass departures and potential legal action. Planet Labor has spoken to two experts on this issue, which has now become unavoidable for HR departments in the UK.

A 2017 report from the UK government served as a wake-up call for businesses in the country. It found that, with 4.3 million women over the age of 50 in the labour market, menopausal women had become “the fastest growing workforce demographic”. It represents a historic shift and can be explained by the fact that never have there been more women in the UK working and enjoying long careers. However, companies in the UK did not anticipate this demographic shift and found themselves suddenly powerless in the face of this increase in the number of workers dealing with menopause, itself a taboo subject in the country.
