Great Britain: the closing of the PSA factory in Ryton seen by the press

Press review from 17 to 21 April 2006. All British newspapers reacted, Wednesday 19 April, to the announcement the day before of the closing of the PSA factory in Ryton, close to Coventry. The media deplores a new hard blow for the car industry. It was an excellent occasion for the British press to compare the French and English social models. (Ref. 06398)

A hard blow to the British  car industry

“The city is just recovering from the closing of the Jaguar factory and of the bankruptcy of MG Rover”, reminds the Financial Times. That amounted to 2 300 jobs, after the 10 000 already lost with Rover. The Times even talks about 4 000 jobs, by adding the suppliers. The press however notices that this announcement was feared and expected for months, the French group had not hidden its intentions as of last year to move its production in Eastern Europe countries,…
