Whilst unionism is on the decline more widely, it is enjoying rare vigour in the media sector, particularly online media. According to an article in the Harvard Business Review from the start of the year, trade unions have set up in around 30 news websites since 2015 and several traditional newsrooms. The most recent example is BuzzFeed News, where the NewsGuild of New York, which represents journalists and media professionals, has been voluntarily recognised after five months of negotiation with management. The tipping point for the unionisation push was the lay off of 15% of the group’s staff at the start of this year.
