USA: ‘Big 3’ automakers set to restart on 18 May

Without any great fuss or fanfare, the Big 3 North American automakers are preparing to gradually reopen their production sites during the week of 18 May, and they have been negotiating with UAW representatives to put in place protocols to combat Covid-19.

By mid-March General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) had closed all their plants, to the great relief of the leaders of the United Auto Workers (UAW) who had been concerned about the safety of their members in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two months on and the damage caused by the virus is indeed clear.…
