Siemens: organization of a European demonstration against job cuts

This coordination meeting, organized by the European Metal Workers Federation (FEM) brought together 30 union representatives and European works council members of the Siemens group from across Europe (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, Slovakia, United Kingdom). The meeting ended with the announcement of European support for the demonstration organized on July 23 by IG Metall at Erlangen (Germany) accompanied by a one-hour work stoppage on the site. The meeting was called after the announcement by Siemens management to cut 16,730 jobs including 5,250 in Germany (see article n° 080570), but the figure is set higher by the metal workers federation at 18,000, 30% being in Germany.
