The German trade union confederation launches an offensive to attract new members

Between 1991 and 2005, the number of members in the eight DGB trade unions, which represents 80% of German trade unionists, has fallen from 12 to 6.8 million. Last week, Michael Sommer, the DGB chairman, announced a series of measures aimed at curb this decline. (Ref. 06478)

In an interview granted last week to the Financial Times Deutschland, Michael Sommer, who is hoping to be re-elected as DGB chairman at the end of May, announced several measures aimed at bringing in new members. Its objective is to exceed the 7 million mark before the end of 2006. To do this, the DGB is aiming to create a “Social Barometer Index” (Arbeitsklima-Index) in companies: “This index could be an important instrument to measure the situation in companies and communicate on important subjects,” explains Michael Sommer.…
