Council adopts the draft Regulation relating to public passenger transport

The Transport Ministers of the European Union reached a political agreement on the draft Regulation relative "to the public services of passenger transport by rail and road". This text, whose objective is to inject more competition in public transport (bus, tram, subway, regional train...), contains principles for the transfer of staff and the respect of social standards. The draft Regulation was adopted on June 9 during the Council of EU Transport ministers, by the qualified majority. Only Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic and Malta abstained. The text recognizes the existence of public service obligations and draws aside the subsidies granted to the operators.
