Italy: harsher sentences for manslaughter at work and prohibition of alcohol at work for certain activities

Two important measures relating to health and safety at work appeared in the Italian Official Journal in March. One toughens the sentences in the event of manslaughter or of serious injuries at work, the other lists the activities in which alcohol is regarded as triggering a risk of industrial accident. New sanctions of the Italian Penal code in the event of death or injuries within the framework of work. The law 21.02.06 n.102 (J.O. n.64 of the 17.03.2006) toughens the sanctions planned for a manslaughter (Article 589 of the penal code) and for serious and very serious injuries (Article 590 of the penal code) which intervene at work and which result from a violation of the law as regards prevention of accidents and occupational diseases.…
