India: states pick apart labour law amid coronavirus pandemic

Since the beginning of May, at least seven Indian states have decided to amend or even completely suspend several labour laws. The stated objective is to revive economic activity, which is almost at a standstill after more than a month of strict lockdown in the country.

In what represents a blow to workers, state after state in India seems to be on a unilateral attack against labour law. The trend began in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, home to nearly 200 million people, which on 6 May suspended all but four of its labour laws. More than 30 laws will no longer apply for a period of three years. The legal provisions relating to women and children have nevertheless been spared and will thus remain in force.…
