Morocco: major social policy direction for 2022

On 09 October during his parliamentary opening speech, Morocco’s King Mohamed VI confirmed his determination, as part of his societal project that forms the core component of the nation’s current social protection system overhaul, to widen social security coverage. By the end of 2022, these changes should enable more than 22 million beneficiaries gain access to basic health insurance that covers the cost of care, medication and hospitalization. Since informal work is commonplace in Morocco this initiative will extend social cover access to nearly half of the population. During his speech the King also discussed his plans to improve coverage for family allowances, pensions, and unemployment benefits.

In addition to extending health cover, the Kingdom also plans to widen the reach of family allowances, via aid for 7 million children and 3 million families. This aid axis is highly strategic because otherwise securing decent education in the Kingdom requires families being able to afford its very expensive private system.…
